Where our tarot card art comes from
Every card you see in Love Queen is the original 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith art, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith.
Who drew the cards
Pamela Colman Smith drew all 78 cards for A. E. Waite. William Rider & Son first published them in London in 1909. She was underpaid and barely credited in her lifetime, so we name her here.
Why we can use them
- UK: Pamela Colman Smith died in 1951, so her copyright ran out on 1 January 2022.
- US: the cards were published before 1929, so they are public domain there too.
We use the original artwork only. Some modern recoloured editions carry their own copyright, and we don't use those. "Rider-Waite" is a trademark, and we use the name only to describe the deck.
Where our copies come from
We took the complete deck as one set from Wikimedia Commons, where every card is marked public domain. Each card below links to its source page.
Who wrote the card meanings
StormJewel wrote every card meaning in the app. Like most modern readers, she builds on the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition. How we judge a good reading explains how the app uses them.
